Tropical moisture is pouring down through the eastern states and meeting up with a low pressure system. The low tracks down the western Victorian border today and brings widespread, soaking rain - just cold enough for snow on the highest slopes from this afternoon.

Then we repeat but it is warmer.

Another low pressure system taps into all that tropical moisture and brings further widespread, soaking rain on Thursday and Friday. The track of this one is moving southwards to the west of Victoria and then along Bass Strait. It will be too warm for snow on Thursday and for most of Friday - but it will turn much colder on Friday night.

Cold fronts then keep it snowy through the weekend, easing on Monday.

How much snow...

15 to 25 cm only up high, on the northern mountains - this afternoon to Wednesday afternoon.

Rain on Thursday and much of Friday.

10 to 20 cm Friday night to Monday morning.
