I don't really want to write my forecast this morning - as I don't really have anything nice to say after today :(

Today's great: a cold front is crossing the southeast of the nation, with plenty of cold air in behind it, so we have persistent snow. The snow level starts at around 1700 metres, but quickly lowers to 1300 metres, with 5 to 10 cm likely. The coldest air lies over Tasmania with another round of low level snow.

The next high takes over tomorrow, making it dry with light winds on Tuesday and Wednesday. There is the chance of snow showers (above 1500 metres) in the far south on Tuesday.

Then it's not great.

A low pressure system lies off Western Australia today, with tropical moisture pouring into it from the warm Indian Ocean. The trailing edge of the high runs to the south of the system, cutting it off from any cold air. The high will help us somewhat though, by trying to force this low, and the one that follows (with the same injection of tropical moisture and lack of cold air) southwards.

There is the potential for much of this precipitation to fall southwards, but rain is likely on Friday and Saturday. The third low in this series should be able to access colder air, so it could turn to snow at some point on Monday.

But, no, it's not going to be a very nice period of weather before that.

REST OF TODAY:

Persistent snow (above 1700 metres at first, then lowering to 1300 metres). Breezy NW/SW winds, strong at times.
