Snow lowering to 600 metres later Thursday, with 20 to 30 cm in alpine areas. Light winds and sunny breaks for the weekend.
Summary:
A strong cold front is crossing southeast Australia, but it is what is in behind it that is really interesting. A trough will follow, while an associated low pressure system crosses Bass Strait. This brings a significant pool of cold air, and heavy snow. Alpine areas can expect 20 to 30 cm by Friday morning, while snow should fall down to at least 600 metres when the coldest air moves overhead tonight.
The snow and wind ease on Friday as the next high moves in. This high will be overhead for the weekend and Monday, encouraging dry weather, light winds and sunny breaks.
Outlook:
The dry weather will continue through much of next week (thanks to a controlling high) - until the next weather system arrives. This should be on Thursday or Friday.
