We have dry conditions for the next two days thanks to a strong high. A cold front tries to break through, but passes to our south, so all we see is some high cloud at times.
A low pressure system, lingering over Western Australia, will get a push along by the next cold front on Thursday, passing through here on Friday. Unfortunately, the cold air from the front stays too far to our west, and this system will produce rain. It turns mostly dry on Saturday as this system moves on - but its upper level energy will be pushed north over inland New South Wales and Queensland. This is the same way the last East Coast Low began, and a new ECL will form once that energy interacts with the warm Tasman Sea.
This low is forecast to affect the alps later Sunday and on Monday. And again, there is no cold air, this one will be rain - and it could be heavy.
The precipitation moderates over the alps on Tuesday with the low over Tasmania, and there is a small injection of cooler air, so this could produce some snow up high.
But there is a much nicer system on the horizon after that - a strong cold front, plenty of cold air, and a cut-off low - to make it move slowly and deliver lots of snow.
