The next big low will bring 40 to 70 cm from Saturday to Monday.

Summary:

Heavy snow returns this weekend.

We take a break on Friday, after early drizzle clears - and we may actually see some sunshine, before the next big snow system arrives.  

A cold front will sweep through early on Saturday, then a deep low pressure system will cross northern Tasmania, passing south of alpine areas on Saturday evening. This system has a great feed of tropical moisture and cold, polar air, bringing another burst of heavy snow. Another surge or trough follows on Sunday, reinforcing the cold air and helping increase the snow - snow may fall down to 800 metres. We are then left in a vigorous southwest airflow on Monday (ie cold, snowy and windy), that eases as the next high approaches from the northwest.

Highlights of this system include:

    very little prefrontal (not including the previous system clearing out on Friday morning)
    big feed of moisture from the northwest, meeting up with cold air
    sustained period of cold southwest airflow to follow

This all adds up to heavy snow, for all alpine areas.

Outlook:

The next high pressure system should slolwy move eastwards, passing northern Victoria/southern New South Wales mid-week. This should ensure dry weather for alpine areas, some sunshine, and a day or two of light winds!
