20 to 40 cm for alpine areas Wednesday/Thursday, then 10 to 20 cm Friday/Saturday.

Summary:

A low pressure system off eastern Victoria is dissipating, while a weak high lies over Queensland, so we begin the week with sunshine.

A cold front will slide southwards across the Bight today, but it is followed by a much stronger front, with significant cold air. A low pressure system will deepen and cross Tasmania on Wednesday, while the strong front crosses the southeast of the country.

Expect 20 to 40 cm of snow on Wednesday/Thursday, falling down to 1200 metres on Wednesday, and to around 900 metres at times on Thursday.

The centre of the trailing high does stay back west of Perth, but the ridge out ahead, up over the continent will lessen the effect of the next system somewhat. Another cold front will develop and push across the southeast of the country on Friday/Saturday. This system is just as cold but should deliver 10 to 20 cm to alpine areas.

Outlook:

Snow continues on Saturday, heaviest in the morning, then clears during Sunday as the next high pressure system moves in. This next high is lower in latitude than what we have seen recently - and may act as a block when the next cold front tries to move through.
